Something Brewing in the Studio

Not much to say yet about these characters, except that a new one-shot comic story is coming very soon. Trust me, it’s short, and I’m almost done with the pages. Just wanted to give you a taste, that’s all. Enjoy!

Marching On

Hi. What’s up. It’s been a while, I know. Should I even consider the last post an actual blog post? I have this idea that these things have to be substantial; blog posts should engage the reader for at least 30 seconds, like a glance, a quick read, something that makes you chuckle, or go “hm, that’s interesting”, and then click back on your Facebook or Twitter tab, waiting for something else to pique your interest.

Of course, considering the chaos of our times, I wouldn’t be able to continue before stating this: I donated some money to the Japan Society, who according to their twitter is donating “100% of donations to our #Japan Earthquake Relief Fund will go directly to victims http://www.japansociety.org/earthquake” – I’ve known about the Japan Society and their programs for a few years now, so I had no qualms knowing that my donation would be put to good use through them. It’s saddening to see so much devastation going on there, especially since I just came back from a trip there a few months ago, so my thoughts are definitely with Japan right now.

I usually don’t post about too much of what I do professionally, but, I figured a few things are worth noting, not necessarily because I worked on them, but because they are interesting projects in their own right.

Eternally away from Japan (日本よりはるかに、永遠に)

Metaphorically speaking, but OF COURSE I WANNA GO BACK!

But, you better pack a lunch cuz this is gonna be one long post.

And may I recommend using my wife’s Flickr page (http://www.flickr.com/photos/85098170@N00/sets/72157625224338273/) of our trip as a visual companion. I included a set of sketches below, so if you don’t want to read my thoughts on the trip, just scroll all the way down to a modest gallery of drawings. We were literally walking so much and trying to see so much, that I really didn’t even have time to take my sketch journal out of my bag to sketch. But, I think looking at these sketches now certainly helps put things in perspective. Then again, this post is much more a an emotional and stream of consciousness account of what I experienced rather than a day by day diary. So, here we go.

HLG – Chapter 5 Scrapbook Teaser

by Régis on October 6, 2010 at 17:05
Posted In: Hockey, Love, & GUTS!

Yeah, I’m back at work on “Hockey, Love, & GUTS!” and it feels great once again! I can’t believe it’s been 6 months since the last installment, and unfortunately, it might be a few more until the next (I’m hoping to have chapter 5 done by early December… crossing my fingers here.) Thumbnails and script are done, and I’m a few pages into the roughs now. It’s 35 pages, and it seems that chapters are getting longer and longer! I really gotta find a good page length so I can put them out faster (15-20 pages is just fine, but I really needed all of these 35 pages to be chapter 5, so sorry.) Anyway, here’s a teaser.

I thought the scrapbook concept matches the high school girl drama… maybe. Well, I was also scrambling to do something quick and in color, and this is what came out. I geek about manga and a trip to Japan after the jump

The Hairdresser’s Nightmare – Story Sketch

by Régis on September 14, 2010 at 16:38
Posted In: The Hairdresser's Nightmare

As the title of the post says, here is the story for “The Hairdresser’s Nightmare”.

After months of writing and rewriting, and after not touching it for a while, I decided to just post the entire story here. Also, since so much of my professional storyboard work can’t be posted online yet, I thought about sharing what I’ve been up to lately, so here it is.

Saturday Evening/Sunday Morning Sketch

Something that started out as my usual red pen on smooth newsprint sketch turned out to be a good figure to practice some color design. So, after an hour or two here it is. Enjoy.

Busy is good, right?

Maybe. A lot going on job wise. Been jumping from gig to gig more often now, which is good because it pays the bills, but bad because it puts all my personal projects on the back burner – oh, and there’s this thing called “life”, which according to a friend of mine, doesn’t really exist if you’re an artist.

So here are a few points about what’s going on, or not going on lately:

* Hockey, Love, & GUTS! – continues to be on hiatus. Not because of lack of interest (believe me, chapter 5 is already written) but really had to put it on the back burner  – see next point

* The Hairdresser’s Nightmare – story thumbnails/script are done. Now I need to really board it properly, and make it into a nice portfolio, maybe to send it somewhere, or just to show off. Keep in mind, this process takes a while too, especially since I’m also doing some color scripts… yeah, it’s gonna take a while…

* Hollywood Star FAIL! – I have more stories written out and would love to board them and put them up here, but alas, it’s not a top priority.

So what is a priority now? Well, basically just try and balance out my projects, and continue to get more work to get more money and eventually being able to turn those projects into professional work. Until then, I managed to squeeze out a sketch featuring a future character in the Hockey, Love, & GUTS! comic.

PS: She’s carrying a barber’s knife though it really should have been a switchblade… goes to show you how much I need to organize my ideas… :/
